The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my Grandmother is her warm and gentle smile.  Whether we just arrived or about to leave, her smile always impresses a feeling of peace and joy.  I do not know if she ever does not smile, but I do know why she does; her love, joy, and peace comes because she knows there is more to life than just living.  You may have a bad day, or a bad week, or even a bad month, but in the end, that doesn't really matter.  What gives you that sense of peace and joy in your heart is not motivated by external circumstances, but it's something from within.  My Grandmother's smile comes not by what people say or do around her, but radiates from her heart.  I know she believes that our lives do not end when we die.  She knows that for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, we will all celebrate with her that day, when we are face to face, in heaven again.  Till that glorious and joyous day, my Grandmother's unforgettable smile will remain with me in my heart and I will smile as well.  The following poem is dedicated to her.

That Day

Days have passed since we've seen her face

That gentle smile I'll never forget

The warmth of her love we all still feel

Those memories will never fade away

Memories of birthday celebrations

Memories of hello's and good-bye's

Memories of chats in her room

Memories etched forever in my heart

And a day shall come; united again

A day shall come; we're face to face

A day shall come; we will embrace

A day shall come; forever, together

I cannot wait till that day in Heaven

Mourning turns into laughing

only tears of joy will remain

When I will see my Grandma again

That day

That day.

A natural tendency it is to always wish for more... for more summers in Taiwan, more time spent with Nai Nai, more storytelling of the framed bIack-and-white family photo hanging on her bedroom wall...of that neighbor doctor who took the picture, of that group of kids who became my father, aunts and uncles, ...of life, and how it was in the past.  I have even wished to learn some authentic ‘Chen-style’ Shanghai cooking from Nai Nai the next summer that I would visit Taiwan or to see her smiling, sitting in the front pew at my wedding years from now, bringing joy to my ‘big day’ just as she had always brought to my past birthday celebrations in Taiwan.

Yet in the midst of wishing for this and that, I could not have wished to have had a ‘better,’ more loving grandmother.  For truly, I know not of any more perfect grandmother than our very own Nai Nai.  Our Nai Nai, who always carried an optimistic outlook and wore a gentle smile on her face, was also endowed with the special gift of love.  From my father, I heard that our Nai Nai was the sister in church who always sought to look after those less fortunate and those in need.  And through my own eyes, I saw that same gentleness and kindness of my grandmother reflected in everyday life.  Whether it was calling to order some more of our favorite zhongzi from downstairs, stocking up an abundance of refreshing bala and sui.li in the fridge, or bringing small Leiyi a little something each time she visited, Nai Nai always took special care to think of others around her.  The details that many people would not take notice, our Nai Nai always seemed to have covered.  And to her, everything was “Manhao.de manhao.de.”  It is this optimism and genuine thoughtfulness and love of Nai Nai that I will ways remember...and miss.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

~ 1Corinthians 13:4-8

世人的心願,自然的傾向就是希望多得到一些…有更多的暑假可以回到臺灣;有更多的時間可以和奶奶在一起;

她都不會忘記帶一點小東西給嬌小的蕾伊;奶奶常常會格外想到並關懷她周遭的每一位;別人所忽視的一些細節,我們的奶奶她總受會注意到;

When I think of Wai Po, what I remember first is her generous heart. As a young child visiting Taiwan in the summers, it was already obvious to me how kind and caring my grandmother was. She would always make sure that we got to eat our favorite foods that we couldn't get in America. She would always make sure that a birthday would be joyously celebrated. Even today, I still treasure the little stuffed animal panda she gave me as a gift almost 30 years ago.

Then, as I grew older and returned to Taiwan as a teenager, I began to appreciate how strong she was to have raised so many children of her own and to have managed a household for so many years. The incredible amount of energy that she must have had! I saw how happy she was to see her grandchildren, and how it made her laugh to watch us spend time together and play. I was glad that she got to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Most importantly, as my wife and I raise a daughter of our own, I look to Wai Po as model for how to be a person of steady faith, to be a spiritual anchor in the family. Her humility, kindness, and compassion -- these are spiritual gifts that we strive every day to teach our daughter, and I will always be thankful for the memory of my grandmother as an example of how to live out these gifts.

Whenever we visited Taiwan, Grandma was always holding a camera and taking pictures of us.  At the end of our trips, she would make a small album that we could bring back to the US to remember all of the special moments we had.  And as I look back through her photos, I am reminded by how Grandma was so loving, generous, and kind.  She was always smiling, and we were always smiling back at her.

My time with Grandma was unforgettable.  Even though I was very young and could not understand much, she found ways to communicate her love to me. I remember once when I was very young, we were in the kitchen and Grandma asked where my mom was.  I struggled to communicate in Chinese that my mom was in another room, but somehow Grandma understood exactly what I was trying to say and gave me a knowing laugh and hug.

What I wouldn’t give for one more day with Grandma, but in our time together she taught me so much.  I know she is looking down with so much pride for the family she raised, and I will always cherish what we shared together.
